The Religion of Peace Strikes Again

A Muslim extremist group is vowing war on the Chinese Olympics. If they follow through by striking at the games, the result will be tragic and contemptible. But it may also, perhaps, offer a valuable lesson for western liberals. Only time well tell.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that a man identified only as "Commander Seyfullah" of the Turkestan Islamic Party contacted the Chinese government with the following threat:

"Through this blessed jihad in Yunnan this time, the Turkestan Islamic Party warns China one more time," Seyfullah said in a video dated July 23, a transcript from a US-based intelligence centre shows...

"Our aim is to target the most critical points related to the Olympics. We will try to attack Chinese central cities severely using the tactics that have never been employed," he said.

The article further states that, in addition to using bad grammar, Seyfullah has claimed credit for a number of incidents already.

Seyfullah claimed responsibility for the May 5 Shanghai bus bombing, which killed three; another Shanghai attack; an attack on police in Wenzhou on July 17 using an explosives-laden tractor; bombing of a Guangzhou plastics factory on July 17, and bombings of three buses in Yunnan province on July 21.

Our Take

The lesson in these Muslim threats and attacks on China, for liberals, is simple. Attempts to blame the United States for the acts of Islamic extremists are misguided and can serve no purpose in deepening our understanding of why we, in this country, have been targeted. The reason for the attacks is already perfectly obvious. All liberals have to do is open their eyes.

The reason for the attacks we have suffered has nothing to do with things like our support of Israel, our insensitivity to Muslims, or our carbon footprint (Michael Moore, in one of his more assinine moments, speculated shortly after 9/11 that the hijackers attacked us because we didn't sign the Kyoto Protocols).

It is modernity itself that the Islamists hate, and the world's refusal to submit to Islam. That happens to be a club most of the world's nations and peoples are members of. China is modernizing at a furious pace, and so it is no surprise at all that they have become targets of jihad.

As opposed as we are to so much of what China stands for in the world, it would still gladden our hearts here at CoverUps if the Chinese government responded to Islamic terrorists with unflinching force and violence. We fully expect them to do so when the time comes.
