We learned of a disturbing story posted on the Gulf Times on March 06, 2007.  It tells of Saudi woman who was forced to undergo 90-lashes in wake of an affair that also resulted in her being gang-raped.  This barbarity is hushed under in the kingdom of Islam, where woman are treated like slaves subservient to all men in ways of life.  Below is a grisly summary.

Reward for being Gang-raped - 90 lashes

• A Saudi woman, identified only as “G” to protect her identify, was kidnapped at knifepoint, gang-raped and then beaten by her brother. She has since been sentenced to 90 lashes. 

• Her crime: meeting a man who was not a relative, a newspaper reported yesterday. 

• The 19-year-old said she was blackmailed a year ago into meeting a man who threatened to tell her family they were having a relationship outside wedlock, which is illegal in the kingdom.  

• After driving off together from a shopping mall near her home, the woman and the man were stopped and abducted by a gang of men wielding kitchen knives who took them to a farm where she was raped 14 times by her captors.  

• Five men were arrested for the rape and given jail terms ranging from 10 months to five years by a panel of judges in the eastern city of Qatif, near the woman’s hometown. 

• The judges also decided to sentence the woman and the man to lashes for being alone together in the car. 

• Men and women are forbidden from interacting in public in Saudi Arabia, which strictly enforces Shariah law. 

• “G” said one of the judges told her she was lucky not to have been given jail time. 

• The woman also told the paper she tried to commit suicide because of her ordeal and was beaten by her younger brother because the rape had brought shame on their family.

Our take

Her own brother beats her for what has happened?  How long will the rest of the world burry its head in the sand as women in Muslim dominated countries are subjugated to slave status.  We can no longer pretend that this is simply a cultural difference, much as we can no longer pretend the enemy is capable of mutual toleration. Abetting their enslavement of women is similar to saying that Hitler had a cultural difference with the Jews.  No tolerance for the intolerable.  Islam must change its deeply ingrained and barbaric views on women.
