Perhaps the Speaker of the house and the senate majority leader have forgotten that an awful lot of american drivers are also american voters

The good people at the Center for Individual Freedom (CFIF) have given House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) a righteous roasting on the rhetorical spit for their outrageous refusal to give Americans some badly-needed relief at the gas pump. Here are some choice excerpts:

Callousness... It's as if Reid and Pelosi hold the American people -- who are upset that they've done nothing to advance a commonsense energy policy since they took control of Congress -- in total contempt

The CFIF rightly calls Pelosi and Reid's conduct something far worse than do-nothingism.

Pelosi and Reid aren't simply out to lunch; nor are they simply proposing "solutions" that make no sense whatsoever and will do NOTHING to lower the price of gasoline at the pump.

In actuality, they are actively blocking the ONE THING that will help lower the price at the pump and bring relief to millions of Americans; namely, lifting the congressional moratorium on offshore drilling.

Pelosi even went so far as to call drilling domestically "a complete hoax."

For those of us who may have missed it, CFIF offers us an excellent quote from conservative firebrand Ann Coulter:

"This is like telling a starving man, 'You can't eat your way out of being hungry!' 'You can't water your way out of drought!' 'You can't sleep your way out of tiredness!' 'You can't drink yourself out of dehydration!'"

Our Take

Marie AntoinettePelosi and Reid – two of the most inflexible and doctrinaire politicians in America – have refused to allow a simple up-or-down vote in Congress on ending the oil drilling moratorium. They have inspired comparisons to the famous (and historically inaccurate, many say) quote attributed to Marie Antoinette, who supposedly said of the starving lower classes in France, "Let them eat cake."

Whether she actually said it or not, the unfortunate princess went to the gallows during the French Revolution, a hated symbol of royal indifference to the suffering of the common people.

Pelosi and Reid risk a similar (if metaphorical) trip to the political gallows. The rising cries of the American public in favor of oil drilling are but the first signs of what could be a ballot-box bloodletting for Democrats in November. Bring it on, we say. The Democrats have earned it.
