America 's Achilles Heel?

An alarming posting on Yahoo.com has recently raised the nightmare scenario of a coordinated terrorist attack against our schools:

  • At the Texas Police Chiefs Conference in Austin , TX in January of this year Lt. Colonel Grossman (retired) of the Killology Research Group and author of “On Killing” and “Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill” spoke regarding killing and terrorism.
  • According to Lt. Colonel Grossman, police are outgunned and unprepared. Soldiers, and all citizens, deserve better than what we currently offer for the protection of our children.
  • Attacks in other countries have been carried out with car bombs, blowing up buses full of passengers, crowded nightclubs, churches, malls, and schools. Terrorists tried to blow up the World Trade Center in 1993. It was naive to think they wouldn’t try again.
  • We just didn’t think they’d use airplanes as missiles.
  • When the Washington D.C. snipers shot thirteen-year-old Iran Brown as he was walking into school, an emotional outcry resonated through the country.
  • In the event of an attack on our schools, what will the police do?
  • With the death of a few thousand children will come a demand for action from the American people; what will it be?
  • Schools across the country will likely close for an undetermined length of time. The economic effect will be staggering.
  • Imagine all those teachers out of work. Many parents may have to quit their jobs to stay home with their children.
  • After September 11, the Federal Government declared war on terrorism while we were mourning our loss and trying to find a sense of direction.
  • The government has taken the lead in the war on terror with legislation and funding.
  • The raised public awareness that came after 9/11 makes it unlikely that terrorists will commandeer another commercial aircraft. But what about a small private aircraft full of explosives crashing into a school?
  • Because of the strength and determination of the FBI and the CIA, the intelligence gathering capability of the United States government has become formidable and stands as the single most important reason we haven’t sustained another attack, yet.
  • But you can rest assured another attack is coming; it’s not if, but when.
  • A September 6, 2001 CNN story on the North Belfast School Crisis chronicled the widespread public revulsion sparked by militants who threw a homemade grenade into the road at students aged four to eleven who were walking to school.
  • From a Frontline interview with Pakistani terrorist Mohammad Abdullah:
  • Interviewer:
You killed 14 children. Four others who died were poor elderly people. How did you justify this massacre to yourself?

    Abdullah:
I was not happy about it, and even told Abu Abdullah to send someone else. But he said it was necessary to establish our dehshat (terror).
In his March 2002 response to the Israeli Government’s Commission on Human Rights Report of the Special Rapporteur, Professor John Dugard stated:

It [the report] makes no mention of the tragic impact of terrorism on Israeli children who are savagely murdered by suicide terrorists in schools, on buses, in discotheques, pubs and pizza restaurants, in market places and in open streets, in shopping centers and in their very homes, on a daily basis. The very idea of terrorists killing our children is so repulsive we deny that our children could become victims of such unspeakable acts.
  • If this can (and does) happen in other countries, what assurance do we have that it won’t happen here, in the United States?

Our Take

America’s most precious resource is not oil, gold, technology, or military might. Its most precious resource is its children. We must always remember that terrorists can strike anywhere and at anytime. Our schools, sad to say, are easy targets. We need to ramp up law enforcement and public consciousness to ensure this nightmare never comes true.
