iran nervous as u.s. talks tough

Feb. 2007

It seems that despite congressional grumblings for Bush’s insistence on increased Iranian pressure, positive results are coming about.  Iran is starting to show signs of dissension on just how serious America is at winning the war in Iraq and dealing with Iran’s nuclear violations.  A recent article in the BBC is summarized below.  A link to the full story is provided at the end.

There are now two possible triggers for an attack on Iran: 1) The nuclear program. But you already knew that, And; 2) A major U.S. casualty in Iraq attributed directly or indirectly to Iran. But, you may not have known that one.

Iranian causes for concern

Tensions over Iraq that have escalated sharply in recent weeks with the US arresting Iranians they say are members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.

There is also a feeling among many analysts that the US has started building a case for war against Iran over its alleged interference in Iraq.

The US making public their targets for a possible military strike on Iran is likely to be seen in Tehran as part of ongoing Western pressure Iranians point out that the disintegration of Iraq is not in Iran's interests.

US targets for a possible military strike on Iran is part of ongoing Western pressure.

In public, Iranian officials brush off such news as psychological warfare by the US.  In private, they are not.

There are deep differences of opinion about how grave the situation is within Iran.

Reformists and moderates are worried America is preparing for war

Iranian President Ahmedinejad dismisses the risk, perhaps believing his own propaganda that Iran is too powerful to be attacked by the West.

Other Iranians are taking a middle position - arguing that the talk of war is a merely that. But they confess there is a possibility of an accidental war if Iranian soldiers retaliated directly against US forces in Iraq.

They compare the situation to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers last summer by Hezbollah in Lebanon which triggered the war there.

If America provoked Iran enough by then their colleagues might be tempted to take revenge and perhaps kidnap US soldiers.  This would provide an excuse for air strikes on Iran.

Everyday Iranians left in the dark

In Iran there is not much awareness of the possibility of war with the U.S.

The local media is heavily controlled and censored.

Most Iranians do not speak a foreign language or have access to an international press.

Independent websites in Iran are filtered by the government.

Rumors circulate but everyone goes about their lives as normal.

There is no sense that people are preparing for difficult times ahead - but there is uncertainty and confusion about the future in Iran.

Tehran alarm over US tough talk

Our Take

The U.S. mass media needs to report on dissension in Iran and get the news, somehow, to everyday Iranians.  It is one thing to peddle news that is sensational to make a buck, but the mass media is shirking their duty by not attempting to infiltrate Iran and get people the news that they actually need.  Is not the media dropping the ball on this in a major way?  Perhaps if only the everyday Iranian knew what was going on in the world at large, they would put even more internal pressure on Iranian leadership to avert a military confrontation as opposed to openly encouraging one while their own people are misinformed or kept in the dark.
