200 freed by u.s. - will the world notice?

March 2007

As Congress continues to debate and hamstring Bush’s efforts in Iraq, there may be indications that progress is being made after all.  A report on IraqSlogger.com based on an anonymous source, claims that U.S. troops recently freed over 200 kidnapped Iraqis.  Now that is good news.  The question is will we even hear about this in the mainstream media providing the story is corroborated.  Here are some facts from the story that give reason for hope.

  • US forces freed over 200 kidnapped Iraqis Tuesday
  • Most of the captives were said to be from the Iraqi police.
  • An anonymous source in the Diyala police confirmed that US forces, in the course of their redeployment near the villages in of Ishqiraq and Salsil, near to Muqdadiya city.
  • U.S. Forces had undertaken wide raids and searches of the surrounding agricultural areas, searching for al-Qa'ida members who were active in the area, Buratha reports.
  • The source added that the US forces found several detention facilities belonging to al-Qa'ida, inside of which were more than 200 prisoners.
  • The majority of the captives were members of the police forces who had been taken captive over the last months, according to the source.
  • US and Iraqi forces are implementing a security plan in the restive Diyala Province.

Our Take

So go free the noble 200.  We hope to hear more and more news like this from the front and if it makes it to our inbox, we will report on it if the mainstream media won’t even mention it.  If more such indictments were presented as they occur, then perhaps our efforts wouldn’t be getting such a bum rap.  After all, we are there to do well for Iraq as well as protect our interest.  There is no shame in that policy.  The Iraqis in general are free where before they were prisoners of a dictator.  Will these freed men be grateful for their rescue?  The rest of the world probably won’t.
