These are strange times indeed, heading into the dog days of August in the Presidential campaign.

All around us the political landscape is full of discouragements. Four buck-a-gallon gas. A weak-willed and pessimistic Republican party. An unpopular war. An unpopular Republican President. A mainstream media openly cheering on a young, new, exciting Democrat candidate. An old, plodding, white-haired Republican contender.

Yet in the middle of it all, startling and out of place like the water running uphill in that old Knotts Berry Farm shack – a Rasmussen poll showing John McCain and Barack Obama in a statistical dead heat. You look again, and then a third time, and the numbers stay the same. No, you're not dreaming.

Now look at that political landscape again. Maybe you missed some things.

Yes gas still costs too much, but the price is coming down.

Yes, the Republicans are beset with problems, but they've got the Dems on the ropes over oil drilling.

The war is unpopular but we're winning it, damnit.

Bush's approval numbers, while low, are rising.

The media's slavish love for Obama, while disgusting to look at, is doing damage to both parties. We should be thankful for it.

The more the public sees Obama the less they like him – he isn't wearing well. The exact opposite seems to be true of McCain.

And speaking of McCain, his arduous campaign journey looks more and more like a fulfillment of that old story about the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady, Mac. Slow and steady.

P.S. CoverUps would like to apologize for the McCain graphic. It was the best we could find of him standing up.
