Intermixed with Hillary Clinton's many disparate stances on illegal immigration are the occasional, very revealing statements she makes that say far more about her character in general than about her transient and flexible “beliefs”. In one recent statement, she expressed her surprise at the vehemence felt by real American voters when it comes to illegal immigrants. Read on for a few specific examples of this:
- According to Hillary, such fiery public sentiment on immigration was nonexistent only seven or eight years ago, when, coincidentally, she and her husband occupied the White House. So what brought about this change? Without missing a beat, Hillary postulated that the reason had to do with, of course, the worsening economy under President Bush.
- No doubt Hillary was a bit off her game, since she was unable to bring Iraq, Guantanamo, or water boarding into the discussion.
- Yet from what she did say, two things are glaringly evident. First, she will not hesitate to offer completely bogus and irrelevant responses to tough questions if she thinks she can gain a political point or two. And second, she rejects outrightly the genuine concerns of voters who express their legitimate anger on this issue.
- Try this for subtlety and nuance, Mrs. Clinton:
Most Americans love their country, revere its heritage, and hope to pass its blessings of bounty and liberty on to their children and their children's children.
They – we – have no intention of sitting idly by while our country is "Balkanized," beyond recognition. We are outraged by the rising tide of "banana republic" high-handedness that’s increasingly visible in the workings of our local, state and federal government.
- Of course the Clinton political machine goes to great lengths to insulate itself from such blasts of reality from an increasingly angry electorate. Thus, while Hillary may occasionally land on the right side of the illegals issue, as was the case in the Las Vegas debate, where she was finally dragged kicking and screaming into mouthing opposition to driver's licenses for illegal aliens, her heart clearly wasn’t in it, and never never has been. If elected, we cannot count on her to not take action to stem this crisis.

It would appear that Hillary understands the issue of illegal immigration purely in terms of political capital. She may win the presidency in spite of this, but in the meantime, where does one draw the line? Surely not between Mexico and the United States. Hillary can’t see that one. Let us hope and strive between now and next November to ensure that this woman is not elected President. Let us further strive to ensure that the President we do elect shares our concerns about illegal immigration.
